225 show write up

Hey all:
In March 225 magazines Alex V. Cook made it out to a show and apparently this is what he had to say about it:

The Lazarus Heart - North Gate Tavern: My concert-going week started on Thursday at North Gate Tavern with the two guitarists from Lazarus Heart summoning up swells of spectral noise that veered between metal and post-rock, snaking through the air like ether does when the bottle would crack open in the old Bugs Bunny cartoons. I was secretly hoping that they would just keep up this locust attack throughout the set but when singer Erin Frith landed her songbird voice on the mic, all came into focus behind her. The Lazarus Heart do that windswept epic rock that is hard to do without coming off maudlin, and while they had a couple moments that had a little too much syrup, it was mostly breathtaking and elegant. Guitarists John Tulley and John Daughdrill created a choppy sea across which Frith's vocals could soar. They are a band I've wanted to see, and I'm glad I did. Check out their myspace page which has one of the better designs I've seen in that limited format.

Our thanks go to Alex for the kind words! please take a moment to check out the original page with his full reviews. and drop him a kind word or three

Big thanks go out to Lauren and Tigerweekly for conducting the interview and writing the article!

Rebirth: The Lazarus Heart

By Lauren DeLoach
The subject line in all the e-mail The Lazarus Heart sends to its fans reads, "Help us quit our jobs so we can play music."

That pretty much sums up the whole mentality of the band. The Lazarus Heart is composed of John Tulley (guitar), John "Caveman" Daughdrill (guitar), Erin Frith (vocals), Jermaine Butler (bass), and Drew Greene (drums). These guys, and their female counterpart, balance a passion for their music with a technical precision that is serious without being pretentious.

Though they could look like marketing heaven to a record exec, with Daughdrill's waist length, pin curl hair and a female lead singer, image is The Lazarus Heart's last concern.

"We're not here to sell haircuts. We're here to put out the best music we possibly can," John Tulley said.

Unlike a lot of bands with female lead vocalists, Erin Frith has the voice to keep up with the rest of the band. She doesn't have the in-your-face attitude that some women get when they're the only female member of a band. The music is mainly guitar driven, though all members contribute something of their own to their songs. All the members have experience being in a band; this is not their first rodeo.

Diversity is a major theme in the band. All members are from different musical backgrounds, having all come from different bands and different musical tastes. Their name, The Lazarus Heart, carries a connotation of rebirth and a coming together. Though the name Lazarus is biblical, the band doesn't have a religious agenda.

Members cited everything from jazz to Radiohead as influences. Each member is a musician in his own right and has his own distinct place in the band, giving their sound a complex texture, without being hard to follow and all over the place.

Covers aren't a staple of this band. The music and lyrics are all original. Tulley had a large body of work when the band was formed, but as the members felt each other out, writing came more easily.

At heart, all the members of the band are true musicians.

"Jermaine is an incredibly talented guy. He can pick up any instrument and make something amazing come out of it," Daughdrill commented of his band mate.

"I don't consider Erin just a vocalist. She's as much a musician as any of us," Tulley said. "We all value each other's opinions, which makes it easier to criticize and be criticized without someone getting their feelings hurt."

For them, mass consumption is not the most important thing. The most important thing is quality.

I asked if they planned on recording any time soon.

"We just want to put out the most professional record possible. Right now, we're still just getting our feet wet. We just want to take plenty of time to make sure what we put out there is the very best we can make it. Getting signed is not our primary goal. If a record company comes along and wants to help with that, great. But we're not rushing things. Our biggest thing is getting great music out," Daughdrill said. "We just have to make sure it's right before we put it out there."

If you can't make it to a show, check the band out at MySpace.com/lazarusheartband. The Lazarus Heart's next show is at Northgate Tavern on February 17. Come out and support the local music scene and give this band a shot. You won't wish you had your cover charge back to buy more booze. I promise.

NEW Demo song!!!!! Passenger Chains w/ Vocals!

Hey all,

We just posted a demo of "Passenger Chains." We know it has been awhile and we still havn't delivered on some full band action. We know you been asking yourselves "wait, arnt they supposed to have a singer?" Well now, all of those stressful moments can be put to rest, because we have done it. Cave And I finally curbed our OCD recording habbits and finished this demo. It seems like it was just september when we first entered my(dancing robots studios) recording lab/my bedroom with annexed living and guest bedrooms to track drums and bass live along with scratch everything else. .....oh wait it was that long ago. Interestingly enough Caveman, was helping out at the helm long before he joined the band and we even booked a first show. go figure. Fast forward to tonight(i'll skip all the boring details) we've finished the song, much to our delight.

You may be wondering if this is part of a larger project that will be for sale, the answer is in short: No....BUT this song is completely free for you to stream and add to your very own myspace page.(we are trying to think of something special to reward those of you who add the song...son drop us a line if you do!) We are gonna wait till we get into a nicer studio to cut a larger scale demo or e.p. and hopefully within 2007 begin on some sorta of fancy full length record.

thank you,

The Lazarus Heart
